This is where I tell you a little bit about me, my education, my work experience over the last 40 odd years and some of the things I have achieved.
Following a degree in Engineering and Economics I worked in the Caribbean as part of Voluntary Service Overseas. On returning to the UK I joined my brother in business and set up a manufacturing facility to supply the new house build market and the DIY market with fitted wardrobes.
I have always believed passionately in people development as the way of creating success and that includes looking after my own development. I completed an MBA at Cranfield University in the late 70s and returned to Cranfield many years later to do their Business Growth Programme. I subsequently worked with some of the tutors on the BGP to deliver a version of the programme to selected dealers in the office products industry.
I first got introduced to the theory behind coaching almost 20 years ago and more recently completed a comprehensive course on Business and Personal Coaching with Barefoot Coaching Limited. I am also a member of the ICF (International Coach Federation).
During my time in business I have tasted both success and failure, I have enjoyed good luck and suffered bad luck, but throughout I have gained a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge.
I have worked within a manufacturing environment, within sales and distribution, within retail and business to business, within highly competitive markets and within those controlled by Government legislation, within markets driven by complex tender processes and requiring detailed service level agreements.
I am an experienced Company Chairman including 5 years as Chairman of a national membership organisation where we radically changed the traditional supply chain to take cost out and keep members competitive. That included creating a membership agreement that kept a cohesiveness in the Group without falling foul of European Competition Law surrounding cartels.
As part of my passion for helping people grow within their work environment, I’ve run management development programmes that have included elements on finance and accounting, communication skills, time management, negotiation skills, recruitment and presentation skills.
I’ve created and worked in high performance teams.
I’ve been involved in writing business plans covering all aspects required to develop a successful business – financial projections, marketing plans, people plans, product development plans and so on.
With one business we took it from scratch to being in the top 25 independent companies in the UK within its sector over a twenty-year period. That involved several restructuring exercises as the company grew, creating a culture where everyone took responsibility for their own decisions and pulled together behind a long term vision and plan. It involved developing increasingly sophisticated management information systems and creating a genuinely customer focussed business.
I ran my own consultancy business for 8 years helping owners and managers with businesses they wanted to grow, businesses they wanted to sell, family businesses with their own unique set of challenges, businesses needing a succession plan.
